Antarctic wildlife
Penguins - such curious birds, ungainly on land but so graceful underwater.
Antarctica is home to several species of penguin, and four are represented in this gallery:
- Emperor
- King
- Royal
- Adelie
I visited the Emperor Penguin colony at Snow Hill Island in October 2010, just a few weeks after the chicks had hatched and whilst the parents were taking it in turns to walk across the sea ice to feed. The youngsters were inquisitive and showed no fear - coming right up to the lens to see what was going on!
